RAJMACHI CAMPING- THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING
ABOUT RAJMACHI FORT
Rajmachi camping is one of the best-known adventures near Lonavala. The Rajmachi Fort is a historical fort located in the hills of the Sahyadri range in the Western Ghats. It stands at an elevation of 2,200 feet above sea level, situated between Lonavala and Khandala. The fortification of Rajmachi comprises two parts: Shrivardhan Fort and Manoranjan Fort. This area is a popular trekking destination, offering beautiful hiking trails, waterfalls, and ancient Buddhist caves along the way, making it a photogenic spot for travelers. It is a favored site for trekking and night camping for those coming from Mumbai and Pune. The trek to the fort begins at Udhewadi village, located at the base of the fort, which was a significant location during the reign of Shivaji Maharaj.

NIGHT TREK TO RAJMACHI FORT BASE POINT
It all started as a random discussion among my friends about the necessity of getting away from home for two days and one night. We decided on a night trek to Rajmachi since it was nearby and relatively easy. It was finally time to give my plans the green light, and I must express my gratitude to my group—this time, none of them made excuses for not coming. It had been a long time since we had all gathered together, so we began gathering more information about night trekking and ultimately decided to explore it.
According to our plan, we caught an express train from Mumbai to Lonavala one Saturday evening, reaching our destination at 11 PM. As soon as we arrived, we started our journey toward Rajmachi. From the main highway in Lonavala, there is an arrow marker placed near a petrol pump that points left toward Rajmachi. If you're traveling by bike, you would take the left turn from the highway. The trek is 18 kilometers one way and goes through dense forests and rocky trails. While the walk is not steep, it does require a certain level of endurance for an overnight hike, as there are some ups and downs along the way. We packed our bags with energy bars and water to help us regain energy during the trek, and we set off for Udhewadi village from Lonavala. Snacks and water can be purchased from the Lonavala bus stop along the way.
The initial route is straightforward and leads you to the rocky trail. Lonavala is a beautiful hill station, so the weather is usually not an issue. The temperature can drop to around 12 degrees Celsius at night. It was quite cold when we started, but as we began walking, our bodies generated heat. Along the route, we encountered fireflies that resembled moving stars, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere. It was tempting to try and capture those small moments, but it proved to be a bit difficult. Trekking under the moonlight was enchanting, and navigating through the dense forest on both sides invigorated us thanks to the oxygen provided by the trees. We were thoroughly enjoying the trek through the dark night while staying alert for insects and snakes.
After approximately four hours of walking, we reached the base of Udhewadi village, which has fewer than 40 homes. We stayed at one of the houses to freshen up and enjoy a delicious breakfast of Kanda-Pohe, a favorite in Maharashtra. However, our destination was still ahead of us. Udhewadi serves as the base village for Rajmachi Fort, and being a popular tourist spot, the locals provide all the necessary arrangements for accommodation and food.

ONE ROUTE TO RAJMACHI, THERE IS A DIVERSION TO CONFUSE TREKKERS, BUT AN ARROW MARKED IS PLACED ON THE WAY |
On the second morning, after freshening up, we headed towards Shrivardhan Fort, known as the Ballekilla of Rajmachi. This fortification is part of Rajmachi. The sun was directly overhead, and the weather was mixed. It took us an hour and a half to reach Shrivardhan Fort, with some breaks for photos along the way. There is plenty of space available at the summit for camping. We spotted some water bodies with a few snakes in them, so it's best not to play around those areas. From Shrivardhan, one can enjoy a beautiful view of Udhewadi village.
After spending another hour at the top, we decided to head to Udhewadi village, where a home-cooked lunch was waiting for us. By that time, we were quite hungry, and after enjoying a delicious meal, it was important to give our bodies some rest. Additionally, the evening promised more photographic opportunities with views of Manoranjan Fort.

In the evening, around 4 PM, we decided to explore another fortification of Rajmachi Fort. The first 20 minutes of the route consist of steep stairs leading up to a small temple, after which the path takes you through dense foliage. Another 30 minutes of trekking brings you to the summit of this trek, which offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding valley. During the monsoon season, you can see numerous waterfalls cascading in the valley, all enveloped in mist. Both forts are well-structured and well-maintained.

After such an absorbing journey, we had dinner at the same place and then headed to a small forest near the village for a night of camping. By that time, all the camping arrangements had been made by the locals. I had camped before, but this experience was special for me because of my group. Camping with your best friends creates unforgettable moments. The forest camping, complete with a bonfire and a few songs, rejuvenated our spirits. Exploring Rajmachi is not just a one-day trek; there’s so much to see. We spent the night in tents.
The next day, after waking up, it was time to leave the village and descend the route to Kondhane village for our return journey. The descent along the Kondhane route was quite steep. We encountered another group ascending towards Rajmachi; they looked exhausted, but we didn't mind since we were heading down. Descending any trail is typically easier.
Along the way, we explored the Kondhane caves, which featured a waterfall, and took a break for about half an hour. These caves are hidden in the forest of Karjat Taluka. It took us almost two and a half hours to reach the base of Kondhane village. Local auto-rickshaws are available from the base village to Karjat railway station. Here, we concluded our trek, filled with cherished memories.

IDEAL TIME TO VISIT RAJMACHI FORT TREK
The best time to visit Rajmachi is from June to September, during the monsoon season, when the area is transformed with water springs and lush greenery. Many bikers flock to this location, despite the rough trail conditions. However, it is advisable to avoid night trekking during the monsoon.
From October to February, post-monsoon, Rajmachi becomes an ideal spot for camping. Travelers often pitch tents at the base of the fort. While it is possible to stay at the summit, be cautious of monkeys and strong winds.
It is best to avoid visiting in the summer, as the heat from the sun heats up the rocks, which can lead to dehydration.
